So, thanks toYouTube, I've developed a major girl-crush on Lissie. I heard "Bright Side" a few years ago and liked it enough to buy it on iTunes but not enough, apparently, to buy any other songs. However, YouTube has recently exposed me to more songs of hers. I envy her voice. So much. So here is one of my favorites, "When I'm Alone," followed by a video of her covering Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness," just because. Also, please note, this first video is done by Sideshow Alley, which is a crew that travels around filming awesome-quality live performances. I've subscribed to them on YouTube. You should too. (And this isn't a marketing ruse. They don't know me.)
"When I'm Alone" by Lissie
I turned my back
You were gone in a flash
Like you always do
You've always gone off somewhere else
And when the phone rang
And I thought it was you
And I sprung like a kid who's just got out of school
But it's almost always never you
Never you
I screamed like a child
My insides went wild
When I'm alone with you
You make me feel, you make me feel
When I'm alone with you
You are the one, you are the one
When I'm alone with you
You make me feel, you make me feel
When I'm alone with you
You are the one, you are the one
And when I reach out and I only grab air
And it kills me to think that you never did care
And it's hopeless
You've always run off somewhere else
I'm throwing a tantrum
Why are you such a phantom?
When I'm alone with you
You make me feel, you make me feel
When I'm alone with you
You are the one, you are the one
When I'm alone with you
You make me feel, you make me feel
When I'm alone with you
You are the one, you are the one
Reminds me of home
When you're around me
Next time you leave, don't go without me
No oh no
When I'm alone with you
You make me feel, you make me feel
When I'm alone with you
You are the one, you are the one
And here's "Pursuit of Happiness" for fun. Enjoy. Or don't. I don't care.

Mix Tape Monday: When My Time Comes
So, I got to go to the Gentlemen of the Road Stopover in Dixon this past weekend. You may or may not have heard of it, but it was pretty packed for Mumford & Sons (who were spectacular, by the way). Anyway, one of their opening bands was Dawes. I really enjoyed what I managed to hear as we hung out before Mumford. Here's one of their songs, "When My Time Comes." Enjoy.
"When My Time Comes" by Dawes
There were moments of dreams I was offered to save
I live less like a workhorse, more like a slave
I thought that one quick moment that was noble or brace
Would be worth the most of my life.
So I pointed my fingers, and shout a few quotes I knew
As if something that's written should be taken as true
But every path I have taken and conclusion I drew
Would put truth back under the knife.
And now the only piece of advice that continues to help:
Is anyone that's making anything new only breaks something else.
When my time comes,
Ohhhhh, oh oh oh.
When my times comes,
Ohhhhh, oh oh oh.
So I took what I wanted and put it out of my reach
I wanted to pay for my successes with all my defeats,
And if heaven was all that was promised to me
Why don't I pray for death?
And now it seems like the unraveling has started too soon,
Now I'm sleeping in hallways and I'm drinking perfume
And I'm speaking to mirrors and I'm howling at moons
While the worst and the worst that it gets.
Oh you can judge all the world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.
When my time comes,
Ohhhhh, oh oh oh.
When my time comes,
Ohhhhh, oh oh oh.
Oh you can judge all the world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.
When my time comes,

Mix Tape Monday: Acts of a Man
If you're wondering where I've been with the music updates...well, let's just say vacation, even though that was weeks ago.
Ok, so, I wen't a little crazy on YouTube using the "Watch Later" function. I ended up with a playlist of 200+ songs. Still trying to listen to them all. But anyway, this was one that really stuck out to me, and it might be a new favorite band. I give you, Midlake's "Acts of a Man."
"Acts of a Man" by Midlake
If all that grows starts to fade, starts to falter
Oh, let me inside, let me inside, not to wait
Let all that run through the fields through the quiet,
Go on with their, own with their own hidden ways
When all newness of gold travels far from
Where it had once been,
Born like the earth over years
And when the acts of man
'Cause the ground to break open
Oh, let me inside, let me inside, not to wait
Great are the sounds of all that live
And all that man can hold
If all that grows starts to fade, starts to falter
Oh, let me inside, let me inside, not to wait
Great are the sounds of all that live
And all that man can hold
Great are the sounds of all that live
That live

Mix Tape Monday: All The Sand In The Sea
I heard this song at Starbucks the other day and I haven't been able to stop listening to it.
Also, while I was at Starbucks, I saw a lady with pink hair wearing pink shoes, pink leggings, a pink skirt, pink shirt, and a pink vest... she looked like a flamingo. I'm not sure how this is relevant. Just felt like I needed to tell someone.
"All the Sand in the Sea" by DeVotchKa
All your precious souls
have been bought and sold
for bargain basement lows
to common criminals
Now you are having visions
Adverse flying conditions
over seas transmissions
to anyone who will listen
Waiting for the drums to kick in
you want to free your earthbound limbs
I am gonna count to three
then you are leaving here with me
Are we wasting all our precious time?
Chasing dollars chasing dimes
german english japanese
all the sand in all the seas
it's all in place
it's all laid out
as we speak it's going down
Oh don't forget me
regretfully
Here's the part that always gets me
You float across the room
your lips are in full bloom
pedals fall from your mouth
have you found me out?
we've been here before
a lovers civil war
I will wait religiously
don't forget you came here with me
Are we wasting all of our time?
Chasing dollars chasing dimes...

Mix Tape Monday: Teenage Dirtbag
Feeling a little nostalgic. I loved this movie in like 8th or 9th grade.
I'm a sucker for an underdog. But really, who would wear that hat in New York?
This guy's voice is already so high that when he sings like a girl it's pretty believable. Another of my favorite songs from this album - yes, I bought this album (a CD, remember those?!?) - is Hump 'Em and Dump 'Em. I'm sad to say that at the ripe old age of 13, I had no idea what that meant. I was a naive. Also, "Love is a Mutt From Hell" is particularly profound. Key lyrics - "He takes advantage of me/He even knows when I pee."
"Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus
Her name is Noelle
I have a dream about her
She rings my bell
I got gym class in half an hour
Oh how she rocks
In Keds and tube socks
But she doesn't know who I am
And she doesn't give a damn about me
Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby
Yeah I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby
Listen to Iron Maiden baby... with me
Ooohoooooo
Her boyfriend's a dick
He brings a gun to school
And he'd simply kick
My ass if he knew the truth
He lives on my block
And He drives an IROC
But he doesn't know who I am
And he doesn't give a damn about me...
Cause i'm just a teenage dirtbag baby
Yeah i'm just a teenage dirtbag baby
Listen to Iron Maiden baby with me
Ooohoooooo
Oh yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missing.
Oh yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missing.
Man I feel like mold
It's prom night and I am lonely.
Lo and behold
She's walking over to me.
This must be fake
My lip starts to shake
How does she know who I am?
And why does she give a damn about me?
(and she said)
I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden baby
Come with me Friday - don't say maybe.
I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby
Like you
Ooohoo Hoo Hooooooo
Oh yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missing.
Oh yeah, dirtbag

Mix Tape Monday: Little Boxes
My friend Jess sent me this vid last week and I've had it stuck in my head ever since. You may have already seen this band's cover of Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," but I think this one is so much more interesting.
Reasons I love it:
1. Their voices (but especially Gianni's - in red)
2. Gianni's hair, duh.
3. The production design (fabulous)
4. The fact that they pop up randomly, reminding me of the wedding scene in Love, Actually
5. The instruments are made out of random items (like the beautiful cigar box guitars), which is reminiscent of jug bands (when people during the Depression would make instruments out of anything they could find for entertainment)
6. Every single person in this large-ish band shows legit musical ability (just think about it: the different sized tubes? Incredible.)
7. Every time I watch it I notice something new: like the most recent time when I realized Gianni's slide is a toilet paper roll
8. Malvina Reynolds wrote this song in 1962 and it's still relevant, today
So, I hope you enjoy Walk of the Earth's rendition of "Little Boxes" as much as I do. Also, there's a "Making Of..." video posted after the lyrics. Check it out, if you want be cool.
"Little Boxes" by Malvina Reynolds/Walk Off the Earth
Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes all the same
There’s a pink one and a green one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same
And the people in the houses
All went to the university
Where they were put in boxes
And they came out all the same
And there’s doctors and lawyers
And business executives
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same
And they all play on the golf course
And drink their martinis dry
And they all have pretty children
And the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university
Where they are put in boxes
And they come out all the same
And the boys go into business
And marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same
There’s a pink one and a green one

Mix Tape Monday: Are You Sad?
This song is by no means new, but I used to listen to it repeatedly my freshman year of college. Today, I randomly stuck an old mixCD into my player and was reminded of how much I loved this song.
I made this video myself using stock footage. It's been over two years since I've edited anything and I didn't have much to work with, so please forgive the amateurishness (yes, I made that word up). It's nothing special. No footage or, even images, of the band. Just felt like playing around with Final Cut Pro again since there were no vids I particularly loved on YouTube.
Here goes:
Are You Sad? - Our Lady Peace
Your life has been so hard
It's dried up
Angels can't keep guard
And I'm trying to reach your hand
But I'm on fire, I never meant
To fade away, away
Oh, just stop pretending
When they say you're nothing
Are you sad?
Are you holding yourself?
Are you locked in your room?
You shouldn't be
Are you sad?
Are you holding yourself?
Are you locked in your room?
You shouldn't be
I'm drowning inside your head
Help me to answer, help understand
Why it's been so long
Since we talked like friends?
Oh, please forgive me, I'm just a man
Who's made mistakes
Oh, just stop pretending
When they say you're nothing
Are you sad?
Are you holding yourself?
Are you locked in your room?
You shouldn't be
Are you sad?
Are you holding yourself?
Are you locked in your room?
You shouldn't be
Are you sad?
Are you holding yourself?
Are you locked in your room?
You shouldn't be
Are you sad?
Are you holding yourself?
Are you locked in your room?
You shouldn't be
You shouldn't be
You shouldn't be
Are you sad?
Are you holding yourself?
You shouldn't be
Are you sad?
Are you holding yourself?
You shouldn't be
Are you sad?

Mix Tape Monday: Somebody That I Used to Know
My friend Ryan posted this on Facebook a few days ago. Let's mix it up this week. Watch the video first, then let's discuss.
I think the song is great. But what really keeps reeling me in is the video. Here's why:
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end
Always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad that it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened
And that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
You didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
And I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know...
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened
And that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
You didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
I used to know
That I used to know
I think the song is great. But what really keeps reeling me in is the video. Here's why:
![]() |
| Rumpelstiltskin (played by Robert Carlyle) |
- The geometry and colors is vivid and intoxicating.
- I'm fascinated by his teeth.
- I keep thinking he looks like Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold in Once Upon a Time.
- His mouth is really wide. Probably in order to fit those crazy teeth.
- And yet, I'm still kind of attracted.
- Kimbra is so pretty. Dang it.
- Her green neck makes me think she's some type of amphibian. Is that weird? It's even enhanced when she sort of slithers over to him.
- The whole thing is pretty awkward, but I can't look away. How does it do that?
- Both of their voices make me super jealous.
- You can totally tell he's checking out her boobs at the end. I just cheapened it, didn't I? Oh well. Saucy.
- It opens up an interesting debate; is it wrong to cut yourself off from an ex? Or is it just part of the healing process? Changing your number might be a little extreme for a run-of-the-mill breakup, but I unfriended my ex on Facebook and have never gone out of my way to reconnect. Break-ups are hard, because you generally have shared a big part of your life with that person, and I don't see a problem with trying to head off the pain. Unless the union resulted in a child, there's no law that states you still have to talk to your ex.
Here's another video (a live version) and then the lyrics, if you want them.

Mix Tape Monday: Let Me Live
As you may know, I went to see Frank Turner live on Friday night. What you don't know, however, is that he ended the night with "Somebody to Love" by Queen. It made me really happy. Because I've loved Queen ever since I first sang along with Wayne and Garth jamming to Bohemian Rhapsody in their car.
Was that a run-on? I think it was. Oh well.
Anyway, I have this weird thing where I only listen to certain genres of music in certain seasons. It's not a rule. It just happens that way. Maybe it's because my moods change with the seasons. Whatever. My classic rock season is late Spring/early Summer. So, I jumped the gun a little this year and we can blame it on Frank.
All weekend after the show I kept playing "Let Me Live" on repeat. This song never gets old. I love that Freddie, Brian AND Roger sing. I love the choir-like harmonizing. I love Brian's fantastic guitar solo. I mean, no one can make a guitar sing the way Brian can. He's ridiculous. So here's one of my all time favorites, enjoy!
P.S. Here's a link to an earlier version of the song. Read the comments. They're entertaining.
P.P.S. I don't much like the video. If you want to be cool, just close your eyes and listen.
"Let Me Live" by Queen
Oooh, take a piece of my heart
Oooh, take a piece of my soul
Let me live, oh yeah
Why don't you take another little piece of my heart
Why don't you take it, and break it, and tear it all apart
All I do is give, All you do is take
Baby why don't you give me a brand new start
So let me live (so let me live)
Let me live (leave me alone)
Let me live, oh baby, and make a brand new start
Why don't you take another little piece of my soul
Why don't you shape it, and shake it, 'Til you're really in control
All you do is take, and all I do is give
All that I'm asking, is a chance to live
(So let me live) so let me live
(Leave me alone) let me live, let me live
(Why don't you let me make) a brand new start... Yeah
And it's a (long hard struggle) yeah
But you can always depend on me
And if you're (ever in trouble) - hey
You know where I will be
Why don't you take another little piece of my life
Why don't you twist it, and turn it, and cut it like a knife
All you do is live, all I do is die
Why can't we just be friends, stop living a lie
So let me live (so let me live)
Let me live (leave me alone)
Please let me live (Why don't you live a little)
Oh yeah baby (Why don't you give a little love)
Go for it baby Let me live, Please let me live
Oh yeah baby, let me live
And make a brand new start
Let me live (let me live), Oooh yeah (let me live), Come on (let me live)
In your heart
(Take another piece, take another piece)
(Take another piece, take another piece)
Please let me live
(Take another piece, take another piece)
(Take another piece, take another piece)
Why don't you take another, take another piece of my piece of my heart
Oh yeah baby
Make a brand new start baby, baby, baby
All you do is take (let me live)
(Oooh, Let me live)
Let me live, live, live...

Mix Tape Monday: To a Poet
| This song, "To a Poet," has the most beautiful harmonzing. It gives me chills. And then the lyrics just make me feel the anguish and sadness, even though I'm not actually sad. It's very moving. The line, "But Frank put it best when he said/'You can't plan on the heart,'" forced me to do a Google search and this poem on the right is what I discovered. I'm a little surprised I hadn't read it before, but then again, I've never had a major interest in poetry. I only know O'Hara by "Having a Coke with You." Anyways, here's the song and the poem. Enjoy. | My Heart by Frank O'Hara I'm not going to cry all the time nor shall I laugh all the time, I don't prefer one "strain" to another. I'd have the immediacy of a bad movie, not just a sleeper, but also the big, overproduced first-run kind. I want to be at least as alive as the vulgar. And if some aficionado of my mess says "That's not like Frank!", all to the good! I don't wear brown and grey suits all the time, do I? No. I wear workshirts to the opera, often. I want my feet to be bare, I want my face to be shaven, and my heart-- you can't plan on the heart, but the better part of it, my poetry, is open. |
To a Poet - First Aid Kit
And you said, "Don't give me nothing
You don't want to lose"
I said, "Darling, I'll give you everything I got
If I want them to choose"
Then I got on a plane and flew
Far away from you
Though unwillingly I left
And it was so, so hard to do
The streets here at home had rapidly filled up
With the whitest of snow
And they don't make no excuse for themselves
And there's no need, I know
Now I miss you more than I can take
And I will surely break
And every morning that I wake
God, it's the same
There's nothing more to it,
I just get through it
Oh, there's nothing more to it
I just get through it
It always takes me by surprise
How dark it gets this time of the year
And how apparent it all becomes
That you're not close, not even near
No matter how many times I tell myself
I have to be sincere
I have a hard time standing up
And facing those fears
But Frank put it best when he said
"You can't plan on the heart"
Those words keep me on my feet
When I think I might just fall apart
Now I miss you more than I can take
And I will surely break
And every morning that I wake
God, it's the same
There's nothing more to it,I just get through it
Oh, there's nothing more to itI just get through it
Oh, there's nothing more to itI just get through it
And so I ask where are you now
Just when I needed you
I won't ask again
Because I know there's nothing we can do
Not now, darling, you know it's true

Mix Tape Monday: Home
I'm not the biggest fan of Valentine's Day, but since it's officially in about an hour, here's a very sweet, romantic song that makes even my heart tingle a little. "Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Warning: It absolutely will be stuck in your head for hours.
I couldn't post the Official Video because embedding is disabled. But here's the link anyway, cause I'm cool like that: http://youtu.be/DHEOF_rcND8
"Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
Alabama, Arkansas, I do love my Ma & Pa
Not the way that I do love you
Holy Moley, Me-oh-My, you're the apple of my eye
Girl, I’ve never loved one like you
Man, oh man, you’re my best friend,
I scream it to the nothingness
There ain’t nothin’ that I need
Well, hot & heavy, pumpkin pie,
chocolate candy, Jesus Christ
There ain’t nothin’ please me more than you
Ahh, Home
Let me come Home
Home is wherever I’m with you (2x)
La la la la, take me Home
Baby, I’m coming Home
I’ll follow you into the park,
through the jungle, through the dark
Girl, I’ve never loved one like you
Moats & boats & waterfalls,
alley ways & pay phone calls
I’ve been everywhere with you
That’s true
We laugh until we think we’ll die,
barefoot on a summer night
Nothin’ new is sweeter than with you
And in the streets we're running
free like i's only you and mee
Geez, you’re somethin' to see.
Ahh, Home
Let me come Home
Home is wherever I’m with you (2x)
La la la la, take me HomeBaby, I’m coming Home
“Jade?”
“Alexander?”
“Do you remember that day you fell out of my window?”
“I sure do, you came jumping out after me.”
“Well, you fell on the concrete
and nearly broke your ass
and you were bleeding all over the place
and I rushed you off to the hospital.
Do you remember that?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Well, there’s something
I never told you about that night.”
“What didn’t you tell me?”
“While you were sitting in the backseat
smoking a cigarette you thought
was going to be your last,
I was falling deep, deeply in love with you
and I never told you ‘til just now.”
“Now I know.”
Ahh, Home
Let me come Home
Home is whenever I’m with you
Ahh, Home
Let me come Home
Home is when I’m alone with you
Home
Let me come Home
Home is wherever I’m with you
Ahh, Home
Yes, I am Home
Home is when I’m alone with you.

Mix Tape Monday: The Lion's Roar
My friend posted the song "Emmylou" by First Aid Kit on Facebook last week and I was immediately hooked. First of all, I've always been a sucker for woodsy and melodic folk music. Second of all, these two sisters are so refreshing and lovely and wonderfully Scandinavian. (Go Sweden! Seriously, though, one of these days I'm going to do a family tree post and I'm going to dig down to my svenska roots). Third, their lyrics are unbelievably mature, especially considering the sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg are only 21 and 18 years old, respectively.
Can I also just pose a question to you all? How in the world do two non-native English speakers write more poetic and meaningful verse than I could ever hope to write? It astounds and confounds me.
Anyways, here is one of their newer songs, "The Lion's Roar." It gives me major chills.
"The Lion's Roar" - First Aid Kit
Now the pale morning sings of forgotten things
She plays a tune for those who wish to overlook
The fact that they've been blindly deceived
By those who preach and pray and teach
But she falls short and the night explodes in laughter
But don't you come here and say I didn't warn you
About the way your world can alter
And oh how you try to command it all still
Every single time it all shifts one way or the other
And I'm a goddamn coward, but then again so are you
And the lion's roar, the lion's roar
Has me evading and hollering for you
And I never really knew what to do
Well I guess sometimes I wish you were a little more predictable
That I could read you just like a book
For now I can only guess what's coming next
By examining your timid smile
And the ways of the old, old winds blowing you back 'round
And I'm a goddamn fool, but then again so are you
And the lion's roar, the lion's roar
Has me seeking out and searching for you
And I never really knew what to do
Sometimes I wish I could find my Rosemary Hill
I'd sit there and look at the deserted lakes and I'd sing
And every once in a while I'd sing a song for you
That would rise above the mountains and the stars and the sea
And if I wanted it to it would lead you back to me
And the lion's roar, the lion's roar
Is something that I have heard before
A children's tale, the lonesome wail of a lion's roar

Mix Tape Monday: Little Talks
So, this song was on NPR the other night and I'd like to believe that it's upbeat bopping kept me alert and at the same time soothed my nerves while I drove through the horrible blizzard that hit the Midwest. Okay, I'm a chicken when it comes to snow. What of it? My little car was not made for inclement weather. Scratch that. I wasn't made for inclement weather. I'd rather sit on my couch with my coffee and a book (or my cousin's Netflix, which I occasionally mooch to rewatch episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer). But if I have to be out driving, I'll listen to stuff like Little Talks by Of Men and Monsters because it's perky enough to keep me from falling asleep but not so upbeat that it makes me start involuntarily tapping my feet (which I need to be in ready-position for possible break-pumping). If any of this is not making sense you can blame the fact that I stayed up late last night watching new series of BBC's Sherlock. Holmes + Watson = best bromance ever. That is all. Here's Little Talks.
"Little Talks" - Of Monsters and Men
Hey! Hey! Hey!
I don't like walking around this old and empty house
So hold my hand, I'll walk with you my dear
The stairs creak as I sleep, it's keeping me awake
It's the house telling you to close your eyes
Some days I can't even trust myself
It's killing me to see you this way
'Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry
Our bodies safe to shore
Hey! Hey! Hey!
There's an old voice in my head that's holding me back
I tell her that I miss our little talks
Soon it will all be over, buried with our past
You used to play outside when you were young,
Full of life and full of love
Some days I feel like I am wrong and I am right
Your mind is playing tricks on you my dear
'Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry
Our bodies safe to shore
Hey!
Don't listen to a word I say
Hey!
The screams all sound the same
Hey!
'Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry
Our bodies safe to shore
Go go go away
I wish you'd disappear
All that's left is a ghost of you
Now we're torn torn torn apart, there's nothing we can do
Just let me go, me against you
Now wait wait wait for me
Please hang around
I see you when I fall asleep
Hey!
Don't listen to a word I say
Hey!
The screams all sound the same
Hey!
'Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry
Our bodies safe to shore
Don't listen to a word I say

Mix Tape Monday: Let's Try This Again
It's been a while. I know. The last month or so has been crazy with trying to get everything done for my classes. Fortunately, tomorrow is my last final. I apologize to my small but faithful readership for my lack of posting. Here's another attempt at regular activity.
Last year my friends and I saw My Darkest Days with Three Days Grace in Milwaukee. I wasn't really familiar with My Darkest Days except the one song I'd heard on the radio ("Porn Star Dancing"), but I'd liked Three Days Grace since about 2003 when I randomly bought their album on one of those CD subscription things. (Back when I still bought CD's instead of just digital copies).
Anyways, My Darkest Days opened with "Save Me" and, though not much of a concert goer, I was immediately struck by the feel of the bass hitting my body from the floorboards. I bought their album, but I really only ever listened to "Save Me" and maybe two other songs from the album, I hardly gave the rest of it a chance.
My bad.
I decided to plug "Save Me" into Pandora so I could find more songs like it and it couldn't be found. I typed in the band and the first song it played was one from the album I own but haven't listened to. It's beautiful. Here it is. This is the acoustic version. I love Matt Walst's voice. (His brother, Brad, is the bassist for Three Days Grace. That had to have been a fun tour for them.)
Here's the album version as well. Both versions are great, but I think I like this one a little better.

"Cant Forget You" by My Darkest Days
When it's said and done, you're the only one (You're
the only one)
And when it's said and done, you're the only one,
you're the only one
Whoever said this pain, would ever go away?
Didn’t know what it meant to, be here without you
Is everything you see, reminding you of me?
Does it hurt when you breathe too? cause it does when I
do, cause it does when I do
Chorus:
When anybody says your name I wanna run away,
I keep remembering I can't forget you
It doesn't matter when I try it happens anyway,
It's been forever and I can't forget you
With every single day, it won't go away
The way I feel about you
And when it's said and done, you're the only one
And I can't regret you, so I can't forget you
When it's said and done, you're the only one (You're
the only one)
And when it's said and done, you're the only one,
you're the only one
I hate to feel this way, my days all feel the same
And yesterday was proof, that tomorrow will too
No matter what they say, can't drink it all away
Cause all that I do, is think about you, is think about
you
Chorus:
When anybody says your name I wanna run away,
I keep remembering I can't forget you
It doesn't matter when I try it happens anyway,
It's been forever and I can't forget you
With every single day, it won't go away
The way I feel about you
And when it's said and done, you're the only one
And I can't regret you, so I can't forget you
Stop haunting my dreams
Please set me free
Stop haunting my dreams
Please set me free
(You're the only one)
Chorus:
When anybody says your name I wanna run away,
I keep remembering I can't forget you
It doesn't matter when I try it happens anyway,
It's been forever and I can't forget you
With every single day, it won't go away

Mix Tape Monday: Cars and Parties
So, I went shopping last Friday. ! I know. Who has time for shopping anymore? Well, I took the day off. And while I was in Anthropologie, not buying anything because I'm a poor grad student and can't afford anything in there, I heard this song by Edith Frost playing. I love it. I don't even know why. I think it's just because it's such an upper. So here's an upper for what's already turning out to be a typical Monday. Oh, and btw, sorry for being MIA last week. I have no idea why I was so lazy...oh wait, yeah I do. Grad school. ::sigh::
Cars and Parties
Everywhere I go reminds me
Of someplace down in Texas
And every time I close my eyes
I dream of my old home
And oh it’s gettin’ so cold ‘round here
There’s too many cars ‘round here
And though I want to open up my heart
There’s too many parties
Everyone I know reminds me
Of someone down in Texas
And every strip mall on the highway
Reminds me of my home
And oh I’m tired of roamin’ round
There’s too many goin’ down
And though I want to open up my heart
There’s too many parties
Every time I close my eyes
I dream of someone in Texas
And every strip mall along the highway
Reminds me of my home
And oh it’s gettin’ so cold ‘round here
There’s too many cars ‘round here
And though I want to open up my heart
There’s too many parties
And oh it’s always so cold ‘round here
There’s too many cars ‘round here
And though I want to open up my heart
There’s too many parties
There’s too many cars ‘round here…
There’s too many cars ‘round here…
There’s too many cars ‘round here…
And too many parties…
And too many parties…
And too many parties…

Mix Tape Monday: Save a Prayer
In keeping with my creepy music sharefest, you know, since Halloween is so close, here's Duran Duran's "Save a Prayer":
Save a Prayer
You saw me standing by the wall,
Corner of a main street
And the lights are flashing on your window sill
All alone ain't much fun,
So you're looking for the thrill
And you know just what it takes and where to go
Don't save a prayer for me now,
Save it 'til the morning after
No, don't say a prayer for me now,
Save it 'til the morning after
Feel the breeze deep on the inside,
Look you down into the well
If you can, you'll see the world in all his fire
Take a chance
(Like all dreamers can't find another way)
You don't have to dream it all, just live a day
Don't say a prayer for me now,
Save it 'til the morning after
No, don't say a prayer for me now,
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after,
Save it till the morning after
Pretty looking road,
try to hold the rising floods that fill my skin
Don't ask me why I'll keep my promise,
I'll melt the ice
And you wanted to dance so I asked you to dance
But fear is in your soul
Some people call it a one night stand
But we can call it paradise
Don't say a prayer for me now,
Save it 'til the morning after
No, don't say a prayer for me now,
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after
Save it 'til the morning after
Save a prayer 'til the morning after
Save a Prayer
You saw me standing by the wall,
Corner of a main street
And the lights are flashing on your window sill
All alone ain't much fun,
So you're looking for the thrill

Mix Tape Monday: Shake the Disease
I'm posting this super late! But I know I forewarned you that Mondays and Tuesdays are 15 hour days for me. Anyhoo, for today's Mix Tape Monday, I present to you Depeche Mode's "Shake the Disease." Maybe because it's October, or maybe because I'm just odd, I've really been digging creepy/eerie sounding music. It probably helps that I just finished Dracula and am currently reading The Historian (both creepy in their own right). But, in all honesty, I've always loved creepy music. Thinking back to childhood, I generally loved the creepy-ish villain songs in Disney (and non-Disney) movies.
Some favorites include "In the Dark of the Night" from Anastasia Anastasia - In The Dark Of The Night

Mix Tape Monday: Karma Police
This is Karma Police by Radiohead. I really love Radiohead. They pretty much always satisfy my thirst for eerie music.
And people keep buzzing about the Panic cover. Forget Panic. It's alright, but they don't have Thom Yorke. Radiohead = win.
Karma Police
Karma police, arrest this man
He talks in maths
He buzzes like a fridge
He's like a detuned radio
Karma police, arrest this girl
Her Hitler hairdo is
Making me feel ill
And we have crashed her party
This is what you get
This is what you get
This is what you get when you mess with us
Karma police
I've given all I can
It's not enough
I've given all I can
But we're still on the payroll
This is what you get
This is what you get
This is what you get when you mess with us
And for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself
Phew, for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself
For for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself
Phew, for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself
And people keep buzzing about the Panic cover. Forget Panic. It's alright, but they don't have Thom Yorke. Radiohead = win.

Mix Tape Monday: Kickoff
I thought I'd start doing theme days. Monday is actually my 15-hour work day so...we'll see how long this lasts.
Anyway, I work with web, so I listen to Pandora and Musicovery a lot. Today my Pandora station has been playing a ton of The Smiths and Morrissey and the like. So, naturally, I got a snippet of lyric stuck in my head from a song that had not played but happened to reference "The Smiths and Morrissey." It took me a while of random google searching to find it. I was pretty sure it was either the Postal Service or Brand New, but everything I typed into the search engine just resulted in actual Smiths and Morrissey songs. Finally, I found it. It is, indeed, Brand New. The song is called Mix Tape, which is rather fitting for the theme, if I do say so myself. Here's the lyrics, I really like them. You should too.
"Mix Tape"
I got a twenty-dollar bill that says no one's ever seen you without makeup.
You're always made up.
And I'm sick of your tattoos,
and the way you always criticize the Smiths... and Morrissey.
And I know that you're a sucker for anything acoustic.
But when I say let's keep in touch,
I really mean I wish that you'd grow up.
This is the first song for your mix tape.
It's short just like your temper,
but somewhat golden like the afternoons we used to spend before you got too cool...
I got a twenty-dollar bill that says no one's ever seen you without makeup.
You're always made up.
And I'm sick of your tattoos, and the way you don't appreciate Brand New or me
And I know that you're a sucker for anything acoustic.
But when I say let's keep in touch,
I hope you know I mean I wish that you'd grow up.
This is the first song for your mix tape.
It's short just like your temper,
but somewhat golden like the afternoons we used to spend before you got too cool...
(yeah, but I wish you were my shadow.)
